Trustpower Volunteer Awards 20 Jul 11

On Monday 18 July 2011 we were honoured to be awarded the Trustpower Volunteer Supreme Award, and we now have the opportunity to go to the National competition on 12 March 2012 and represent our region. This is incredible recognition for each of our fantastic volunteers who so generously give their time to Homes of Hope and our precious children - thank you to each and every one of you for everything you do! Seen pictured is Sinead Roach, one of our amazing volunteers, holding the Supreme Award Trophy. Sinead is representative of the passion and dedication demonstrated by the 'village raising children' which is Homes of Hope's mission. The following is an explanation of the carving and symbolism from the award plaque. "Traditional Symbolism The tauihu or figurehead was mounted at the front a waka or canoe. The spirals of the tauihu are known as TAKARANGI. The literal translation of this 'giddy', which explains the relationship of the spiralling design. Symbolically, the pierced filigree nature which allows the viewer to "see the light" through the carving pattern is representative of enlightenment and wisdom. The main figure at the front edge with the backswept arms represents a famous ancestor, and is designed to placate the seas upon which the vessel sails, and to imbue seamanship with courage, endurance and enterprise. The peripheral figures maintain whakapapa (genealogical) links between ancestors and those on the vessel. Explanation of Carving: The piece has been hand crafted by James Hingatu Tapiata of Ngati Hangarau hapu of Bethlehem. James also has connections to Ngati Ranginui, Ngati - te - rangi and Ngati Porou. The carving has been completed in kauri milled from stumps recovered from Coromandel, while the base is swamp kauri recovered from the Pyes Pa area 4 years ago.The Kaupapa or theme of the carving is whakakotahitanga or unity. The tauihu, as the figurehead of the waka or canoe was used as a basis to represent the journey of unification and community spiritas we enter this new millennium. The spirals in this instance represent the five criteria on which the awards are based:Starting from the main figure at the front and going in a clockwise direction the first 3 figures represent the sponsors of the awards i.e Trustpower, Western Bay Of Plenty District Council and Tauranga District Council. The other interspersed figures represent the various community groups, who, through their specific roles and functions strengthen the theme of unity." Our thanks to Trustpower and the Tauranga City Council for this wonderful initiative and the encouragement it brings to the volunteer sector. We do what we do because of the passion of our cause - your recognition is a fantastic encouragement. To all our fellow community organisations and their volunteers - kia kaha - it's a privilege to be working alongside you in our communities.

April 2010 Newsletter 13 Jun 11

April 2010Dear Wonderful Friends of Homes of HopeWhat an amazing, busy and eventful year it has been at Homes of Hope!During the past year we have had the privilege of providing both long and medium term care aged between 3 months and 14 years of age. These children have continued to stabilize and thrive with many of them excelling in activities they participate in, such as netball, rugby, soccer, Number and Word Works and school. We have had new children come to us and some existing children reunited with their family and/or extended whanau. It is a true blessing to be able to provide love, stability and healing for these precious precious children. A recent family group of three children came to us with high anxiety/stress behaviours, aggression and much swearing. Over a period of four months we saw these children change and become kind, loving, no swearing, socially adept, routine centred and flourishing. They have been reunited with grandparents. Some wonderful outcomes for our children continue to be achieved- the following school awards at the end of 2009 - Leadership Award, Maori Cultural Award, Academic Achievement Award and Most Improved Student Award. In addition we have received a report from a Pediatric Specialist reporting ¡§amazing¡¨ and ¡§incredible¡¨ turn arounds in the children¡¦s health and disposition when they come into our care. It is truly wonderful to see the children grow and flourish! In October we opened our 4th home in Waitakere Auckland where we are able to care for 6 children at a time, to date we have cared for 10 children. We have named the home Whare Awhi. Louise Stodart is Auckland¡¦s General Manager and the driving force behind Homes of Hope Waitakere and continues gifting her time on a voluntary basis. Craig and Angela Walden, our House Parents for 15 months in Tauranga, have taken up this position in Waitakere. We continue to have a wonderful, dedicated team working both in our homes and within Administration, and continue to give thanks for each and everyone. In the homes - House Mum Perry is approaching 6 years of service. Our support staff Tom, Natalia and Eileen work throughout the week to support the House Parents and are often found to be working in a voluntary capacity. We are delighted to welcome Dean and Jeanette Davis who joined the team in time for Christmas and have brought with them a wealth of knowledge and experience working with children. Looking ahead we are moving towards opening Homes of Hope in Rotorua in 2010/11, where a real need for our service has been identified. We will keep you inform with the progress of this. St Peters Church gifted their Christmas Appeal proceeds to purchase furniture and furnishings for this home. We were overwhelmed to receive $7600.00 in donations - thank you to each and every one of you who kindly donated to this future home. ƒº God bless one an all!We are so grateful to the many Volunteer Caregivers who care for our children for respite weekends in their homes and to the many many generous people who help with gardening, cooking, cleaning, groceries etc. Thank you to each and every one of you. We particularly thank Angela Wallace and Steve Ellingford who have just completed four years of mentoring and care support for two gorgeous boys who have returned home to live with their Auntie. Ange and Steve epitomize our vision and mission, giving of themselves tirelessly, unselfishly and advocating strongly on behalf of the children. That¡¦s what it¡¦s all about! Well done team!! Thank you one and all! This is truly the village raising the children. We have cared for 61 tamariki so far ¡V what a privilege! What a blessing! Building the next generation together!None of this would be possible without the financial support of our donors and there are many to thank! Firstly to those who give faithfully and regularly by way of Automatic Payments. It is this giving that not only gives us some certainty and stability, but much needed encouragement. So thank you for the HUGE difference you are making. We¡¦d also like to thank the following Grant/Trust Organisation¡¦s who have provided grants/donations to fund projects or costs: J R McKenzie Trust, Trillian Trust, Lion Foundation, Sky City Community Trust, First Sovereign, Cue Sports Foundation, Perry Foundation, Southern Trust, The Acorn Foundation, Bay Trust, Zespri, BP, NZ Community Trust, Pub Charity, Community Post, The Gallagher Charitable Trust, Lion Foundation, TECT, Tauranga Bridge Club, Rotary and SCA.Additionally I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Tauranga City Councilors and Stewart Trust for granting us $400,000.00 to contribute towards the mortgage of our largest home. We are incredibly thankful for this Grant as this will ensure the on going long term ability of Homes of Hope to provide our care for our wonderful children. It has provided us the opportunity to consolidate our position. To all of you throughout the year who have kindly donated clothing, furnishings, knitting, toys, toilet paper, gifts and outings for the children, your time, regular donations, one off donations, expert knowledge, prayers, blessings plus much much more - we truly would not be here without you. You enable us to continue to do what we are called to!! Please accept our heartfelt appreciation for all that you do!!! A special mention to Dave, Sara and Phil at Mirage Design. A huge thank you for all the amazing art and design work you do for us at no cost. We highly recommend Mirage Design if anyone is looking for graphic design work ¡V they are fantastic!!!! A very special thanks to Harwood Homes who have supported us since 2004 and continue to do so ¡V your support is amazing!2009 has been a challenging year financially in the prevailing financial climate. Thank you to a faithful God, and to all who have supported us. In particular to a dear friend, who chooses anonymity, but without whom we would most certainly have struggled to keep our doors open. This is the kind of generosity and pluck that gives commitment its meaning. With the Stewart Trust Grant we are looking forward to a much brighter future in 2010 and beyond. On behalf of the children, the Team and the Trust, thank you again for your commitment, prayer and support during 2009/2010. I look forward to many more joining us to see Aotearoa New Zealand truly become a nation which cares for ALL its children well.¡§There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no more duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they grow up in peace¡¨Kofi AnnanWarmly, Arohanui Hilary Price Q.S.MCEO/Founding Trustee

December 2009 Newsletter 18 Jan 10

December 2009 Dear Wonderful Friends of Homes of Hope What an amazing, busy and eventful year it has been at Homes of Hope! During 2009 we have had the privilege of providing both long term and medium term care aged between 3 and 12 years of age, averaging 10 children at any given time. These children have continued to stabilize and thrive with many excelling in the many activities in which they participate, such as netball, rugby, soccer, Number and Word Works and school. We have had new children come to us and some existing children being reunited with their family and/or extended Whanau. It is a true blessing to be able to provide love, stability and healing for these precious precious children. In April 2009 due to the recession, we were forced to make the decision to decommission one of our Homes. This home has been used by For The Sake of Our Children Trust to advance their work developing young community leaders. We are looking forward to re-commissioning this home in the New Year. In October we opened our 4th home in Waitakere Auckland where we are able to care for 6 children at a time. We have named the home Whare Awhi. The amazing Louise Stodart is Auckland’s General Manager and the driving force behind Homes of Hope Waitakere. Craig and Angela Walden, our House Parents for 15 months in Tauranga, have taken up this position in Waitakere commencing 20th December. We continue to have a wonderful, dedicated team working both in our homes and within Administration, and continue to give thanks for each and everyone. In the homes - House Mum Perry has recently celebrated 5 years or service. Our support staff Tom, Natalia and Ben and Eileen work throughout the week to support the House Parents and often are found to be working in a voluntary capacity. We are delighted to welcome Dean and Jeanette Davis who join the team in time for Christmas and bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience of working with children. We are so grateful to the many Volunteer Caregivers who care for our children for respite weekends in their homes and to the many many generous people who help with gardening, cooking, cleaning, groceries etc. Thank you to each and every one of you. In particular, Angela Wallace and Steve Ellingford who have just completed four years of mentoring and care support for two gorgeous boys who have returned home to live with their Auntie. Ange and Steve epitomize our vision and mission, giving of themselves tirelessly, unselfishly and advocating strongly on behalf of the children. That’s what it’s all about! Well done team!! Thank you one and all! This is truly the village raising the children. We have cared for 47 tamariki so far – what a privilege! What a blessing! Building the next generation together! Looking ahead we are we are aiming to open in Rotorua in 2010, where a real need for our service has been identified. We will keep you inform with the progress of this. We have also been invited to consider 4 homes in Hamilton ideally suited to meeting the needs there. None of this would be possible without the financial support for our donors and there are many to thank! Firstly to those who give faithfully and regularly by way of Automatic Payments. It is this giving that not only gives us some certainty and stability, but much needed encouragement. So thank you for the HUGE difference you are making. We’d like to thank the following Grant/Trust Organisation’s who have provided grants to fund projects or costs: J R McKenzie Trust, Trillian Trust, Lion Foundation, Sky City Community Trust, First Sovereign, Cue Sports Foundation, Perry Foundation, Southern Trust, The Acorn Foundation, Bay Trust, Zespri, BP, NZ Community Trust, Pub Charity, Community Post. Additionally I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Stewart Trust for granting us $400,000.00 to contribute towards the mortgage of our largest home. We are so incredibly thankful for this Grant as this will ensure the on going long term ability of Homes of Hope to provide our care for our wonderful children. To all of you throughout the year who have kindly donated clothing, furnishings, gifts, and outings for the children, your time, regular donations, and one off donations, prayers, blessings plus much much more - we truly would not be here without you. You enable us to continue to do what we are called to!! Please accept my heartfelt appreciation for all that you do!!! “There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no more duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they grow up in peace” Kofi Annan On behalf of the precious darling children and our wonderful team we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. May you truly know the blessings of joy, peace and hope that our Saviour King brings!Meri Kirihimete kia tupato me rua mano tekau.
