George McMillan with his garden windmill birds.

Homes of Hope volunteers want to make a meaningful contribution and a difference in the lives of children who come to them from very hard places.

Homes of Hope is a charity that is passionate about delivering the best therapeutic foster care services within a strong community.

They work to prevent siblings from being separated and ensure the stability of children’s foster care for as long as it is needed.

Homes of Hope provide safe, loving homes where siblings in care can stay together.

“Seeing the value in what we do – our volunteers want to play a part in that,” says Homes of Hope CEO Hillary Price.

“There is so much involved in running a charity service like ours and the volunteers contribute in many ways – cooking, baking, working bees, fundraising, sausage sizzles.

“They bring much needed practical help, but also lots of love and encouragement. One very special person who brings this is Poppa George McMillan.

“We really want to take the time to honour this amazing volunteer who, for the past four years, has been making and selling his wonderful wooden garden windmill birds to raise money for us.

Travelling throughout the Bay of Plenty to do so, he has raised more than $15,500.

“An octogenarian, his bright, bubbly, positive self shines bright wherever he goes,” adds Hilary.

“Thank you Poppa George; you are a most wonderful support – a strength and reliable friend. We are so grateful to have you as part of our whanau. Thank you for all the many hours and hours of loving labour you have given to us. Not to mention the joy the birds give – helping our children to fly.”

Source: https://theweekendsun.co.nz/

THE HOME OF HOPE -BLACK TIE EVENT speechless…………….

Thank you Kirsty and Blair Cashmore from Cashmore Real
Estate – WOWZA – They know how to PARTAY and ‘make hay
while the sun shines’! Actually they ‘made a great deal of
funds’ for the new home for more children from hard places
who desperately need our help, a total of $97,426.00!!!!

What an awesome night it was. Thanks to Mike and Carol
Farmer who held the event at the Farmer Autovillage and all
the team at Cashmore Real Estate who helped out, especially
Taylor and Beck’s who along with Kirsty and Blair put many
long hours into making this an incredible, sold-out, night.

Such a great team! The auction went off with a bang, the
Champaign flowed, Nigel Latta was a treat to hear speak
and Blair not only excelled as an auctioneer but also showed
his talents as the best MC for the night. He really has missed
his calling! We cannot thank the community enough for
coming out in force to support our children and the work we
beaver away to make the Bay of Plenty THE BEST!

THE HOME OF HOPE – BUILT WITH LOVE progress update on our new home for children.

Classic Builders are underway with our new home which will give up to 6 more tamariki at any one time the safety they so badly need and deserve. The house blessing was a time when Kaumatua, Caregivers, House Parents and Children came together to celebrate this incredible time. Since then, it has been all ‘hands-on-deck’ with subbies and tradies who work with Classic Builders coming to the party to donate time and product! The floor is down and the house is starting to rise from it’s foundations. We are so grateful to you all!

Cashmore Real Estate have also come to the party by throwing a party, YES, a black tie event on the 10th April 2021 that will see all the ‘who’s-who’ of Tauranga get their glad rags on, spit ‘n shine their shoes, and come to hear Nigel Latta speak. Bid for some exceptional auction items up for grabs! It really is all happening for our ‘babies’. If you would like tickets please email info@homesofhope.org.nz or view the invite, later in this email.

SUPER PROUD – HOUSE PARENT WINNER – 2020 EXCELLENCE IN FOSTER CARE WARDS

We are so, so proud of Maraea, known to our children at Homes of Hope as Auntie Mars (see image below). She is one of 10 foster carers nationally who was honored within NZ for this award held at Government House last month.

Maraea has served with us for 8 years and has a HUGE heart, she is such a hard worker for our young tamariki. This award is in recognition of her tremendous love, attention and ongoing, neverending support. You are a true hero for our children.

Me hikoi kotahi tatou. Walking together, working together. A little birdie told me that last year, another of our House Parents Auntie Perry won the same award! The Aunties are ROCKING it!

OUR COVID BEARS ARE MAKING HISTORY

Remember the teddy-bear mania during the lockdown? Thousands of Kiwi kids put their teddy bears in windows to make a tough time fun.

Sadly, lots of Kiwi kids missed out on fun like this, because they were experiencing neglect or abuse.

At Homes of Hope our wrap-around foster care keeps siblings protected and together. Our therapeutic approach supports their healing, restorative journeys.

Partly funded by the government, in these pressing times, we need help now more than ever. Especially since we are building another new home for more children who are in need of care (see The Home of Hope further down this newsletter).
